If you want to invest small amounts regularly in stocks, DRP plans are a great way to start.
Select Stocks
I suggest picking 5-7 stocks. You can start them 1 or more at a time. But this will give you some diversity. One stock may not do so well, but it will likely be balanced off by another that does great.
The "getting started" is the most difficult part, but not a big deal. Stock1 does not sell stocks, we provide information.
Get the Prospectus
DRP Plans are administered by transfer agents (banks) chosen by the company or by the company itself. The programs vary in qualifying conditions, fees, etc. Once you select stocks that interest you, get the DRP prospectus. Each company publishes a DRP prospectus which describes their plan. Drop us an e-mail if you need contact information to get the prospectus.
Think of "getting started" as a two step process.
- Select the Right Stocks: Some companies allow you to enroll in their Dividend Reinvestment Program direct (you don't have to own any shares). But most require that you own or buy your initial shares (normally 1 share is all you need) Have the stock registered in your name. Stock brokers are the normal source of the initial share(s).
Programs that allow you to enroll direct will have a minimum $ amount or # of shares as the initial investment. It ranges from about $250 to $1000. These stocks are indicated by "DSP" in our research list. Go to: DRP Stock List.
- Get Enrollment Forms: Once have meet the minimum enrollment requirements, call the transfer agent to request enrollment forms. They will enroll you and provide you a regular statement (monthly is normal) of your stock share position. The statement will also include a tear-off form to send in Optional Cash Payments to buy additional shares.
